  4. A sick obsession ignites the country's worst mass killing

  7.     It was the last hour of fall-term classes at the University
  8. of Montreal's engineering school, the Ecole Polytechnique.
  9. Students faced eleven days of exams, but at least they could
  10. look forward to the cheering prospect of Christmas vacation
  11. afterward. That tidy calendar was suddenly and tragically
  12. shattered last week in a hail of semiautomatic rifle fire
  13. ignited by a bizarre sexual hatred. When the climactic hour
  14. ended, Canada had suffered the worst mass murder in its history.

  16.     The bloodshed began shortly after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, when
  17. Marc Lepine, 25, an unemployed electronics buff who once
  18. aspired to study at the engineering school, arrived at the
  19. hilltop campus building. Armed with a hunting knife and a
  20. .223-cal. Ruger rifle manufactured in the U.S., Lepine climbed
  21. to the second-floor corridor and shot a woman student dead.
  22. Then, a carefree grin on his face, he entered the
  23. mechanical-engineering class of Professor Yvon Bouchard, where
  24. a student was in the midst of presenting his term project. "I
  25. want the women!" cried Lepine, ordering female students to one
  26. side of the room and men into the hall. "We thought it was a
  27. joke," said Bouchard. They learned otherwise when the gunman
  28. pumped several rounds into the ceiling. Shouting, "You're all
  29. a bunch of feminists!" to his women hostages, Lepine opened
  30. fire, killing six on the spot.

  32.     Proceeding on his mad mission, Lepine went down to the
  33. first-floor cafeteria, where he killed three more women, then
  34. up to the third floor, where he gunned down four others. Besides
  35. the 14 women killed, 13 people, four of them men, were wounded.
  36. Finally the attacker turned the weapon on himself, blowing away
  37. part of his head.

  39.     In Lepine's pocket, police found a three-page suicide note,
  40. in which police said he complained that "feminists have always
  41. ruined his life." Born to a French-Canadian mother and an
  42. Algerian father who left the family when his son was seven,
  43. Lepine studied intermittently at junior colleges and expressed
  44. the hope that he would be accepted at the university. Though he
  45. had no history of criminal behavior or mental illness, he
  46. existed on the margins; a loner who enjoyed war movies, he was
  47. unable to sustain relationships with women and claimed to have
  48. been turned down by the military for being "asocial."

  50.     Lepine purchased the rifle, a model that is popular with
  51. ranchers for killing coyotes, at a local gun store three weeks
  52. ago, after undergoing a police-file check as required by law.
  53. Canada regulates the sale of handguns much more strictly than
  54. does the U.S., but hunting guns, including semiautomatics, are
  55. widely obtainable. In the wake of last week's misogynic
  56. massacre, there were calls for tighter rules on the availability
  57. of combat-style weapons as well as soul-searching debates about
  58. the victimization of women. But the most touching commentary
  59. involved very few words. After a candlelight procession to the
  60. university, some 1,500 women and men sat silently in a Montreal
  61. chapel, the quiet broken only by the occasional hymn.
